Dusshera Festival,

Reading, England, United Kingdom Reading, England, United Kingdom

  • About the event

The UK's biggest Dusshera celebration with 35 feet Ravan effigy, Dandiya, and Diwali Mela Shopping Expo!
Dussehra is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. It is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar. It marks the end of "Ramlila" and remembers God Rama's victory over the demon Ravana, or alternatively, it marks a reverence for one of the aspects of goddess Devi such as Durga or Saraswati. Dussehra, the towering effigies of Ravana symbolizing the evil are burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami.

Dandiya or ‘Dandiya Raas’ is a dance form performed during the time of Navratri, with its origins in Gujarat. The dance attire comprises of bamboo sticks painted in bright colors, women are dressed in three-piece attires called chaniya choli with bandhani dupattas, while men wear sherwani or kurta pajama. The performers strike the wooden sticks in rhythmic beats, and a drummer standing in the center of the circle commands the rhythm of the dance.
