  • About the event

First Place for Youth’s 7th Annual Maximum Impact Golf Tournament at Crow Canyon Country Club on Monday, September 19, 2016. The tournament, our organization’s primary fundraiser of the year, raises funds to support at-risk California foster kids as they learn to support themselves.

We will host about 130 golfers and 50 volunteers at this event. We will have a great day of golf at Danville's beautiful Crow Canyon Country Club. The event will include a four-person scramble format, breakfast, BBQ lunch, complimentary snacks, water and soft drinks on the course*, alcoholic drink ticket**, and an awards reception following golf. Golfers will be able to enjoy fun games and prizes, a raffle, and a silent auction.

For more information about these and other sponsorship opportunities, contact Connie Handlin at *****@****.***.

    Why should you sponsor?

Do you remember when you turned 18? For most of us, turning 18 was a defining moment. It was the time when you felt you were no longer a kid, but still weren’t quite sure how to be an adult. Mostly, it was a time to dream about future possibilities, an exciting and uncertain time. But despite the uncertainty, you always knew your family would be there when you needed them.

Now, imagine turning 18 without a family to support you. Imagine the anxiety of not knowing where you’ll spend the night, how to find a job and manage to stay in school.  Imagine not knowing where your next meal will come from and who or how to ask for help.

Yet, at 18, thousands of young people leave their foster home with no place call home, no one to call Mom or Dad, and no dreams beyond tomorrow. Homeless and hopeless, these are the young people who live on the streets or in cars; who stop going to school and, worse, find themselves in jail. These are the young people who have gotten no encouragement to develop their talents and skills; and little or no opportunity to share in the American Dream. With heartbreakingly little hope, they simply struggle to survive.

In 1998, our founders, Amy Lemley and Deanne Pearn, came together with nothing more—and nothing  less—than a dream. They were pioneers in what is now one of America’s great foster care institutions. Today, 18 years later, we mark the moment we became a nationally-recognized program with the power and potential to do truly great things.

From the beginning, our founders embraced the simple premise that all teens --no matter how difficult their life circumstances—could become capable, contributing adults; that they could be inspired by our support of them and our belief in them.  Our founders believed that despite extraordinary odds, teens aging out of foster care could succeed in life—and succeed they have.

Hundreds of young people aging out of foster care—once homeless and hopeless—have succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations.  Today they are teachers and nurses, accountants and bankers, mothers and fathers.  They succeeded because of the character they possess and because First Place for Youth was there for them—to raise their sights, lift their spirits, to help them overcome the obstacles they were sure to endure, while holding them accountable for their commitments.  To teens aging out of foster care, First Place is not just another agency, it is their family.

Each year in the Bay Area, nearly 600 foster kids turn 18 and are ill prepared to live independently and succeed. Many of these young people have experienced severe trauma and neglect as children and, as a result, are highly vulnerable to becoming homeless, unemployed, undereducated, and living in poverty. First Place supports older foster kids, ages 18 to 24, at a critical time in their lives when they need to learn to support themselves. We help our young people find safe places to live, get their first jobs, learn to pay their own bills, and learn to become responsible adults.

For the last 18 years, First Place has been there like a family for thousands of foster youth in California, helping them move into their first apartment, enroll in school and find their first job. Helping them become the remarkable young adults that we always knew they could be.
