  • About the event

Founded in 2010, Hippocampus Magazine is an online publication set out to entertain, educate and engage writers and readers of creative nonfiction. HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction Writers, now in its fourth year, is an in-the-flesh extension of that three-fold mission.

Wait, what? HIPPOCAMP? OK. It may sound silly at first glance, so if you’re new to us, we should explain: First, our magazine name comes from the seahorse-shaped portion of the brain related to forming memories: the hippocampus. So, then, our conference name is a playful take on our magazine title mixed with that summer-camp feeling you get when spending lots of time learning and bonding with new friends over a short period of time! Voila! HippoCamp! And this means we can call our attendees HippoCamp’ers!

    Overview

This three-day Pennsylvania writing conference features 40+ notable speakers, engaging keynotes, informative sessions in four tracks, interactive all-conference panels, author and attendee readings, social activities, networking opps, and optional, intimate and immersive pre-conference workshops.

We can’t wait to tell you more about this year’s programming — and welcome you to Lancaster, Pa., a city rich in history, arts and culture.

    Format & Details

HippoCamp is formatted in the style of a professional development, industry conference more so than that of a typical writing or academic conference. Expect to learn a lot and return home with a notebook and brain full of ideas!

To give you a sense of what this conference is all about, a sneak preview, if you will:

    Why should you sponsor?

HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction Writers (produced by Hippocampus Magazine and Books) is now in its fourth year, and with each event, buzz and attendance are growing. This year's annual gathering is Aug. 24-26 in Lancaster, Pa., and our headlining keynote is Abigail Thomas. We expect 250-300 writers to attend.

Our event is the perfect place to reach engaged and enthusiastic writers and readers of creative nonfiction, passionate wordsmiths who believe in the value of investing in themselves and their creative pursuits. With a strong publishing category and its proximity to Lancaster, I thought Kickstarter would be an ideal fit for our conference!

We’re offering a variety of ways for organizations to get involved, from exhibiting to placing an ad in our program and on up to giving a presentation. I've attached our conference prospectus to this email; it includes an array of options at varying levels of participation, something for every budget. (You may also view these details at our sponsor page, here.)

Aside from reaching attendees at the event, exhibitor-level partners receive added-value promotion before and after the conference, too, which provides meaningful exposure—via impressions/interactions on our web, social, and email entities—upon sign-on until late August, and even after, as event websites are archived online. At just about for months away, now is the perfect time to come on board.

    Our 3-Fold Mission

    • Entertain – provide fresh, enjoyable creative nonfiction from emerging and established writers
    • Educate – help writers improve their craft, and recommend further reading related to the genre
    • Engage – encourage conversation between reader and writer on site and beyond

Extensions of our Mission – Bringing Things to Life

Our online magazine is the heart of what we do. But, now, we’re so much more than a digital journal! In 2015, Hippocampus Magazine held its first HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction Writers, a three-day event that brings our mission to life. In 2016, Hippocampus Magazine launched its Books Division, Books by Hippocampus. Our community has now grown in scope and size and reaches more people than ever!
