  • About the event

The mission of Horses Offering Opportunities of the Future, Inc. (HOOF KY) is to provide disadvantaged or at-risk youth constructive activities that teach stewardship of the horse and encourage community responsibility. Through participant equine interaction, the program promotes: horsemanship, discipline, education, social development, team building, confidence, fitness, and moral values. Development of these attributes and skills is intended to prepare HOOF KY participants to meet the everyday challenges they face by making positive choices that will lead to productive and successful life styles.

Horses Offering Opportunities for the Future, Inc. (HOOF KY) adopts the philosophy and puts into action the immortal words of Winston Churchill that, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man”
by combining the magic of the horse with the natural enthusiasm of a child to positively impact the lives of disadvantaged, at‐risk, and trauma stricken youth, ages 9‐17, in the Kentucky region. HOOF KY provides weekly summer day camps consisting of 30 youth each which run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Campers come from various non‐profit agencies including residential facilities. Some are Wards of the State. All are transported and accompanied by their respective trained agency counselors. When campers arrive, they are divided into color-coded groups. HOOF KY counselors are assigned to and remain with their groups during the entire camp. Each
group rotates throughout the day to different stations where they learn:

    Why should you sponsor?

Today young people are challenged to make healthy decisions in a culture laden with negative influences.   Given the stressors of family disruption, violence, and substance abuse, many youth become distrustful and build walls protecting themselves from their environments.  Many experience low self-image and a declining sense of personal empowerment, hiding behind the defenses of negative behaviors, manipulation, and isolation.  HOOF KY understands that you can’t fool a horse; consequently, our participants quickly learn that they must EARN the companionship of a horse which can positively impact their perspective and their life choices.

    Makayla James

My name is Makayla James. I have been riding and working with horses for fifteen years. I am very passionate about this organization and program because I get to experience how horses change these kids one-on-one. I am lucky to be able to be a Senior Camp Counselor every year. I always have kids sad to leave at the end of the week, and it is very special to see how they connect and bond with the horses.
