Launched in 1992 by the Pharm.D. Class of 1995, International Day is organized and hosted by the first-year students to celebrate the rich cultural heritages represented within the college as well as a class fundraiser through meal-ticket sales thanks to food donations from area restaurants.
Thanks to Houston's place among the most diverse cities in the U.S., UHCOP – and the university itself – have long enjoyed a similar status for racial and ethnic diversity. In fact, an annual poll taken during the Pharm.D. orientation reveals approximately 25 languages and dialects spoken by students in any given year.
International Day will be the first college-wide, in-person event since 2019 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Since then, students and faculty alike are, more than ever, eager to reconnect with each other. What better way to learn more about the people who will be by your side through the arduous journey of becoming a pharmacist than by celebrating and learning about each other's culture and heritage. By supporting this event, it will enrich the college's relationship with each other and broaden the horizons on the understanding of the variety of people that have come together to achieve greatness.
My name is Monique Bactad, a first-year student at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. I am the co-chair of the Marketing Committee and Chair of the East Asia Regions Committee for International Day 2022. As such, I am tasked with creating an atmosphere and experience that will enlighten students and faculty on the diversity of our college, as well as being able to connect in-person in the midst of a socially distant time.
