  • About the event

Greetings from Nicotine Addiction Group UMCAS (NARCC), University of Malaya. In line with Malaysia aims to become a smoke-free nation by 2045 and sustainable country by 2030, we are taking a step ahead to integrate a multidisciplinary team towards the tobacco-free Malaysia. Smoking is recognized as a key factor in increasing and exacerbating inequalities in health and related areas. Further, vulnerable groups and countries are increasingly targeted by the global tobacco industry.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a United Nations which applies to all countries including Malaysia, took initiatives with the aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all people. Reduce in tobacco use is relevant with several goals of the SDGs such as ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages, ensuring sustainable production and consumption pattern.

As we recognise the importance of your company in sustainable development field, we require your partnership that facilitate cooperation across a range of areas, and that ensure international support for developing capacity and implementing initiatives in order to curb the tobacco utilization. With great honour, we cordially invite you to become a sponsor for our international conference, that will highlight your involvement in these initiatives through tobacco control.

This is 3rd KL Nicotine Addiction International Conference, will be held at Hilton Hotel, Petaling Jaya on 9-11 July 2018. We are diligently working on bringing the most knowledgeable participants from local and overseas, as well as leaders in the industry to explore the important topics. There are many opportunities for networking and socializing during this conference.

    Why should you sponsor?

It will be a good platform for your company to advertise and promote company products, developing customer loyalty and building new relationships with suppliers, distributors, plus other stakeholders. Besides, it would be a great opportunity for your organization to have some visibility to the audiences who would appreciate your company involvement in curbing tobacco use.

    NARCC UMCAS

The Nicotine Addiction Research Group UMCAS (NARCC), was initiated in mid-2009 by a multidisciplinary group of academics interested in conducting research and providing services in nicotine addiction albeit tobacco smoking. It is part of the University Malaya Centre of Addiction Sciences, the main center investigating and working on research related to addiction.

Its humble beginnings started with the landmark study of “Empowering Dentists into a Tobacco Cessation Program” initiated in November 2009, with initial grant allocation from University Malaya and was subsequently provided with added research grant. What was unique about this study was that dentists in Malaysia were never included formally to participate in smoking cessation programs by the Ministry of Health. This study was unique enough for members in health to co-partner in the study. This study has assisted in including dentists into the National Strategic Plan in 2015 which is a blueprint initiated by the Ministry of Health to reach a smoke free Malaysia by 2045. This study is also the precursor for the Smoking Cessation Organizing, Planning and Execution Training Program (SCOPE) which has since November 2015 been recognised as one of three methods to become a certified smoking cessation provider. SCOPE is now supported by a Grand Challenge grant on upscaling smoking cessation efforts in Malaysia.

In the last five years, the NARCC team has not only expanded to include many other collaborating partners, but also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Institute for Health Innovations (NIHI) led by Prof Dr Chris Bullen and the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC) Unit of the Ministry of Health Malaysia in areas of tobacco control research, training and services.

This group is led by A/P Dr Amer Siddiq Amer Nordin and A/P Dr Farizah Mohd Hairi. The membership within and outside of UM is growing and the number of researchers being part of NARCC has now doubled from when it was initiated.
