The LLS, 2018 MWOY, Maryland's ES,

Grasonville, Maryland, United States Grasonville, Maryland, United States

  • About the event

This is a 10 week friendly competition that ends on June 10th with the Grand Finale Gala.  Teams have 10 weeks to raise the most money that they can.  Every dollar is one vote.  The candidate who raises the most money is names Man or Woman of the Year.  This is the reason I decided to join this fundraising team:

As many of you know, in 2014 my entire world was turned upside down. My mother, Mary Purdy, who was and always will be my hero, a 10 year colon cancer survivor, was diagnosed with what was called a treatable but not curable cancer. She fought like the warrior she was, but was called home on December 24, 2014. After, picking myself up and straitening my warrior crown I decided to become a Colon Cancer advocate at the end of 2016. Thinking that 2017 I would devote more time to this new advocacy. But alas, God had other plans for me. I had seen the 2017 LLS schedule for Missy’s Mojo team and had committed to doing the motorcycle run, just like we had done for the previous 4 years. However, little did I know how my world would be rocked again. On April 12, 2017, my 30 year partner, Joe, was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. And again there were those awful words, treatable but not curable.  So, when Kris Shannahan, the 2014 Woman of the Year, asked me if I would like to be nominated to run for Women of the Year, of course my answer was yes. The leukemia & Lymphoma Society had already become part of our family, from participating in the fundraisers in the past years, to having them help us with co-payments for Joe’s treatments. Joe is now currently in remission!

I am running as a candidate for the Woman of the Year to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  My team is called “Capel Strong”. We will be raising money for blood cancer research during a 10-week period (March 29 – June 9). This is my opportunity to give back to the University of Maryland Greenbaum Cancer Research Program and to Joe’s Hematologist/Oncologist Dr. Seung Lee and Dr. Jean Yared.

I want to make a difference and Make Someday Today.

    Marcia Parlett

Hi, my name is Marcy Parlett.  I live in Grasonville with my fiancé, Joe Capel along with our 2 dogs and 2 cats.  I have 3 grown children, Rachel (34), Daniel (31) and Alexis (24).  I am also the proud Mimi of Leah (18), Alicia (12) and Bella (6).  I worked for Safeway for over 20 years before retiring in 2016.

In 2014, my entire world was turned upside down.  My mother, who was and always will be my hero, a 10 year colon cancer survivor, was diagnosed with what was called a treatable but not curable cancer.  She fought like the warrior she was but was called home on December 24, 2014.  After, picking myself up and straightening my warrior crown I decided to become a Colon Cancer advocate at the end of 2016. I also lost a very dear friend Cheryl McPhearson to another treatable-not curable cancer in July 2017.

So when Kris Shannahan, the 2014 Woman of the Year, asked me if I would like to be nominated to run for Women of the Year, of course my answer was yes.  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society had already become part of our family, from participating in the fundraisers in the past years, to having them help us with co-payments for Joe’s treatments.  Joe is currently in remission and will be undergoing a stem cell transplant, so that he will have a greater chance of the longest remission possible.  Some of his treatments would not be available to him if it wasn’t for the LLS.

I don’t think there is one person out there that has not been touched by cancer in some way.  Whether it was a spouse, parent, child, grandparent or friend.  This is the reason I am honored to raise money for LLS.  I want to be able to take those awful words of treatable-not curable and change them to CURED!   In honor of my mom, Joe and Cheryl, we are #CapelStrong…. So Be Brave and Believe!

So please help us make a difference by donating to our Team Capel Strong!!!!  Every dollar counts and no amount is to small.
