Did you hear? Recently scientists have discovered a predisposition of tumors and unusual coloring in a LEOPARD GECKO to a gene linked to human melanoma! This discovery is a huge advancement and a testament to how important reptiles can be to research.
Unfortunately, reptiles currently face unique challenges. Profound social and cultural barriers result in high rates of persecution, less public support for conservation, and less priority in regards to research, attention, and funding.
But the good news is…Kids LOVE reptiles! Nurturing this interest not only benefits these amazing creatures but fosters an interest in science as well as an overall appreciation for nature.
Students will have an opportunity to present their work to the public and other students, showcasing the importance of reptiles at the annual National Reptile Youth Alliance Research conference. First place, Second place, and Honorable Mention merit prizes are awarded for projects in the Junior and Senior Divisions. Selected Grand Prize recipients are awarded and presented with the opportunity to study alongside respected scientists and herpetology research experts.
Considering a correlation between children losing interest in STEM related subjects and certain social factors, The Reptile Youth Alliance puts a strong focus to encourage kids from diverse demographics to participate. This is substantial as STEM activities have been shown to engage youth academically, socially, and emotionally. Through the Reptile Youth Alliance Research Conference, hundreds of the community’s students will be challenged to go beyond their classroom studies to conduct independent project-based research. They work independently or in teams to address questions in the field of herpetology, a branch of zoology that deals with the study of reptiles and amphibians.
Reptiles such as snakes and lizards routinely make the list of the most reviled creatures by humans around the globe. This aversion, often exacerbated by media stereotypes painting these reptiles as vicious creatures, prevents these same people from understanding the benefits of reptiles and complicates the work of conservationists to preserve habitat, protect species, and study these creatures. Reptile enrichment specialist Jessica Hartman, makes the case that reptiles are vitally important to the ecosystem and imagines a world where the important study of these vertebrates leads to advances in cancer treatment, coronavirus research, search and rescue, and more. A native of central Florida, Jessica spent her formative years fascinated by the state’s bountiful variety of reptiles and amphibians. Today, she is an entrepreneur turned passionate conservationist with a mission of bringing people closer to wildlife. Her focus is educating youth on some of the world’s most misunderstood and detested species. As a founder of The Reptile Youth Alliance, a regional reptile outreach and educational program she hopes to further her goal to spread awareness about local conservation efforts.
