  • About the event

    THE AWARD
TheOrigin Award honors a distinguished Black Angeleno whose work carries forward the legacy of the 26 African-descended founders of Los Angeles—visionaries whose contributions shaped this city long before they were acknowledged.

On this100th anniversary of Black History commemorations -  with the revered Cookie Parker as our Honorary Chair—we stand on the shoulders of those who made this moment possible—among them, Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History Month, and OASC founder Vassie D.Wright, who established OASC’s ground-breaking ongoing partnership with the City of Los Angeles—via Mayor Fletcher Bowron—76 years ago to recognize Black History Month in citywide programs, such as the Origin Award, A  Conversation with Authors, and joint LA CityCouncil OpeningCeremony for Black History Month/OASC honorees…

    AWARD RECIPIENT CHARLES BURNETT

Raised in South Central LA/Watts areas, Burnett has spent more than four decades chronicling Black working-class life with honesty, artistry, and unflinching dignity.

As a cornerstone of the LA Rebellion—the historic movement of Black independent filmmakers at UCLA, his alma mater— he helped reshape what cinema could be, and who it could speak for.

With two of his films—Killer of Sheep & To Sleep with Anger—named to the renowned Library of Congress’s National Film Registry, as well as honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences with an Honorary Oscar, his work stands as a living monument to truthful storytelling

    Why should you sponsor?

    Our Value Proposition includes:

    1. Legacy and legitimacy. This isn't a startup event — it's tied to 100 years of Black History commemoration, a 76-year City of Los Angeles partnership, and an honoree with an Honorary Oscar and two films in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. Sponsors attach their name to something historically significant, not just a one-night gala.

    2. Audience quality. The Origin Award draws civic leaders, cultural institutions, arts patrons, and engaged Black Angeleno professionals. That's a highly desirable, highly networked audience for brands in entertainment, finance, real estate, healthcare, legal services, and the arts.

    3. Cultural credibility. At a moment when corporate DEI commitments are under scrutiny, sponsoring an event that is explicitly rooted in authentic Black Los Angeles history — not manufactured — signals genuine alignment. Charles Burnett's work is about truth and dignity, not optics. That rubs off on sponsors who show up.

    4. Media and institutional visibility. The Mayor's Office and the City Council tie-in, the Honorary Chair (Cookie Parker), and the centennial framing give this event natural hook for press coverage, social amplification, and institutional recognition.

    So for:

For entertainment companies — Mr. Burnett is a touchstone for a generation of Black filmmakers now at the height of their careers. Sponsoring this event signals insider cultural literacy, not just philanthropy.

For financial and professional services firms — the City of Los Angeles co-presentation provides a layer of civic legitimacy that makes this a safe, high-profile giving opportunity with no controversy risk.

For local businesses and real estate — Burnett's work is about South Central and Watts. Sponsoring an event honoring him is a direct statement of place-based commitment to the community you serve.k filmmakers now at the height of their careers. Sponsoring this event signals insider cultural literacy, not just philanthropy.

    OUR VISION

We envision a world in which Black history is understood not as a separate or supplemental narrative, but as the foundation of American history itself — fully recognized, honored, and integrated into the nation's cultural and historical consciousness.

    OUR MISSION

Our mission is to ignite and sustain conversations that reframe how Black history is understood, affirming the African and African American experience as central to the American story. Through scholarship, storytelling, art, media, and public engagement, we confront the erasure and misrepresentation of Black heritage, hold cultural and educational institutions accountable, and support rigorous study and creative expression that ensure Black lives, contributions, and legacies are seen, honored, and preserved.

    WHAT WE STAND FOR

Truth & Historical Accuracy  We are guided by rigorous historical integrity. Every program, publication, and partnership we undertake is held to the standard of truthful, evidence-based scholarship.

Cultural Accountability  We hold educational, cultural, and media institutions accountable for how Black history is represented — and we advocate actively when that representation falls short.

Equitable Access to Knowledge  We believe that knowledge of Black history belongs to everyone. We work to remove barriers and create pathways for communities to access authentic scholarship and storytelling.

The Power of Representation  Whose stories are told shapes collective memory. We center Black voices, honor lived experience, and champion representation as a tool for systemic change.

Collaborative Action  We work in partnership — with communities, institutions, scholars, artists, and youth — to create lasting impact across education, media, and culture.

    OUR STORY

Founded in 1945 by visionary leader Vassie Davis Wright, Our Authors Study Club was personally chartered by Dr. Carter G. Woodson — the Father of Black History Month. Their shared mission was to study authentic African American writings and ensure Black history's rightful place in America's story.

From a small group of postal workers in Los Angeles to a nationally recognized cultural institution, OASC has inspired thousands through storytelling, scholarship, and community action. Today — eight decades later — OASC continues that founding mission through education, community programs, and cultural preservation, carrying forward the legacy of those who understood that the fullness of American history cannot be told without centering the Black experience.

    "Black History IS American History."
     — The founding principle of Our Authors Study Club, 1945
